Tim W. Nattkemper (TWN) is Professor for Biodata Mining at the Faculty of Technology, Bielefeld University, Germany. His research interest is the development of computational methods for the analysis of large collections of digital images and video (bioimages, marine imaging, remote sensing).
The focus of TWNs research is the development of algorithmic approaches to harvest large marine image and sensor data collections for species abundances, hidden regularities, biodiversity compositions or any other kind of knowledge discovery. Two very important aspects are (i) the computational classification/quantification of the image scenery with computer vision / deep learning and (ii) the integration of knowledge from domain expert communities, through modern AI-equipped web-platforms and datadriven visualizations. Together with his team, TWN developed the BIIGLE platform (biigle.de) for manual and AI-assisted online image and video annotation of bioimages, which is used by >4,200 users (mostly from academia) in more than 50 countries. BIIGLE is supported by the German Network of Bioinformatics (deNBI) and by national initiatives for sustainable research software development such as NFDI4Biodiversity and NFDI4Earth. It is also part of international research software initiatives like the ELIXIR Biodioversity
Community.
