About Coral Cartography

Mapping the Deep Ocean's Future Through Science and Innovation

Deep Sea Coral 10

Map. Understand. Protect.

Our Mission

Protecting Cold-Water Coral Ecosystems

We exist to map, understand, and protect cold-water corals across the Atlantic Ocean. By combining expert taxonomic knowledge with seafloor imagery and AI, we’re creating the most comprehensive maps of cold-water coral distribution in the Atlantic ever produced.

Cold-water corals are an important part of deep-sea biodiversity, creating complex habitats that support thousands of species. Yet they face unprecedented threats from fishing, mining, and climate change.

why choose us

Why This Work Matters

The deep ocean covers more than 60% of our planet's surface, yet remains largely unexplored. Traditional approaches to mapping cold-water corals limit our ability to effectively protect them.

Discovery Through Destruction

Most cold-water coral sites have been "discovered" through destructive bottom trawling, which damages the very ecosystems we're trying to protect.

Data Locked Away

We've identified 24,643 hours of video footage across the Atlantic, 50% has never been analysed. Information exists but remains inaccessible
Our Approach

How We're Making it Happen

We’re pioneering a new model for deep-sea conservation that combines human expertise with artificial intelligence.

Habitat Modeling

Sophisticated statistical models predict coral distribution across vast unsampled areas.

AI Analysis

Deep-learning models rapidly process massive backlogs of imagery data.

Density Mapping

High-resolution maps showing where corals form dense communities.

Climate Scenarios

Modeling future refuge sites under changing ocean conditions.
